Bahamas New Year's Windjammer Cruise...
Sail on the Liberty Clipper as we ring in the new year - Bahamas Style! This is a tall ship windjammer sailing cruise in paradise where we will also be in Nassau to celebrate the grand event in the Bahamian calendar - JUNKANOO - the Bahamas verion of Mardi Gras or Rio's Carnival!
What is Junkanoo?
Junkanoo is a spectacular party that is held on December 26th and again on January 1st. During Junkanoo, the streets are flooded with floats, clowns, acrobats, go-go girls and conch ringers all blaring tunes and rythms in a wild celebration of life. Junkanoo is the Bahamas version of Mardi Gras or Rio's Carnival, but it has a distinctly Bahamian flair that you've got to witness to understand...
Junkanoo is a celebration of the emancipation from slavery and started in the early seventeenth century. It was traditionally a time when slaves had a few days off to visit family and friends and celebrate. Over the years, various governments have attempted to ban Junkanoo, however, the tradition has survived and is now stronger than ever as a celebration and party and as a political expression of freedom.
We will plan to attend the Junkanoo Celebration in Nassau where over 60,000 spectators gather round - the New Year's Parade is even larger than the Christmas Parade. The parade runs all night on New Years eve night starting late - this is truly a party extraordinaire. The party kicks off at the British Colonial Hilton on Nassau's historic Bay Street where performers burst into the streets in a gyrating throng and wind throughout the streets as revellers contribute to the melee. Many of the out-islands also offer smaller Junkanoo Festivals, however, weather permitting, we will be back in Nassau for the grandaddy celebration!
Other parts of the trip...
In addition to enjoying the Junkanoo festival, we're also going to get some great sailing in! The weather is warm and the water comfortable for swimming and snorkeling during this cruise. You'll be able to take our sea kayaks for a paddle, jump in our custom sailing dingy or explore ashore as we island-hop through the Bahamas on this fun-filled holiday experience. We'll even rig up a rope swing from the mast so you can swing over the side for a splash while we're at anchor.
Book early as this is a popular cruise and space is always limited.
