Liberty Classroom: Education Training Under Sail in Boston

The Program...

Helping to Set the Sails

Sailing aboard a tall ship offers an enriching opportunity for learning and enjoyment...

The Liberty Classroom seeks to introduce young people to the value and excitement of the sailing experience.

Instruction from our Professional Crew

The Liberty Classroom is a program that offers local youth groups the rare chance to sail as student trainees on a three hour educational sail aboard the 125-foot Schooner Liberty Clipper. Groups will have the chance to learn from and work with the crew to sail this majestic ship!

Expert Training and Coaching

Sailing the waters of Boston Harbor from Historic Long Wharf, the Liberty Classroom provides an introduction to seamanship (basics) under the direction of an experienced captain and crew. Participants will be provided instruction followed by hands-on training for the application of acquired skills. The Liberty Classroom provides a safe and enjoyable experience where teamwork and leadership skills are developed.

Help Tend the Sails

Liberty Classroom uses the Logbook of the American Sail Training Association. Students are familiarized with safety, navigation and seagoing skills. They will learn to read charts, tend sails and generally acquire the skills necessary to participate in the operation of a large sailing vessel.

Learning to Fix the Sails

Included in the training are maritime topics of interest such as the unique features of Boston Harbor and the Boston Harbor Islands. The crew will also share nautical heritage and history...

The Ship...

The Grand Liberty Clipper

Designed in 1983 as a classic Baltimore Clipper Ship, the Liberty Clipper is a two-masted top-sail schooner and an official tall ship. With gaff-rigging and elegant lines, she is "a modern vessel from another time." Come experience the Liberty Clipper.

Thank you for a very well run program. This is one experience that the girls and their chaperones will remember for a lifetime!  – Junior Girl Scout Troop 4531

The American Sail Training Association & Logbook...

The American Sail Training Association (ASTA) coordinates sail training and educational activities in the Americas, including races, tall ship gatherings, seminars and annual conferences; all of which are devoted to the promotion of safe training and education-under-sail. The ASTA Logbook is designed as a companion guide to a seafaring educational program.
